The strict nature reserve was set up in 1975 with the aim of preserving the natural ecosystem of the Viesvile basin, which is very valuable from a natural point of view. The strict nature reserve includes the bogs at Artoji and Glitis, as well as part of the surrounding Karsuva Forest. The 1,072-hectare Artoji Bog, or Didzioji plyn?, is the most impressive. The shallow Lake Buveiniai lies in the northern part and is drained by the 15-kilometre-long Viesvil? stream. The marshy upper reaches of the stream are noted for their great variety of plant communities. The mid-Viesvil? valley traverses dunes and is fed by many springs. Black alder groves grow around the stream, and several small meadows can still be found. The Glitis bog is slightly bigger and lies at the eastern end of the strict nature reserve, near Lake Glitis. Dry pine forest prevail in the areas surrounding the reserve, and only in the western part are there several spruce stands. Lynx, wolves and otter live in the strict reserve. After Cepkeliai, this is possibly the best breeding ground for cranes in Lithuania. It also has many other rare species of birds, plants and insects.
