Asveja regional park Print E-mail

Asveja Regional Park was established to protect the landscape of the Asveja lakes. The contains boasts a unique meeting point of valleys formed by glacial waters, with steep-sloped and deep lakes, which number more than 30. Marshland, virtually untouched by human activity, makes up about 8% of the area.

Nature

003.jpgThe largest and most interesting lakes include Lake Asveja, which is 22 km long, and smaller but not less valuable lakes Baluošai, Berža, Viranglis, Ilgis, Žvernas and Nikajas. Among other valuable sites are the unique landscape of Lake Baluošai and the centuries-old pinewoods with biotopes important for birds of prey, the marshy Berža valley with many lakes containing a great variety of biotopes, the Jurkiškis (Stirnelė) stream, the landscape of the Vyriogala Lagoon of Lake Asveja and the surrounding forest, the source of the Dubinga stream, the landscape of the Žalktynė Lagoon enclosed by a forest, the Ešerinė raised bog, the Majas stone carried and dropped by the devil in the Purviniškiai wetland, the thickest (Purviniškiai) pine in Lithuania, the Alka sycamore and the Abejutė oak. The Purvinas Marsh is the largest, and abounds in rare species of flora and fauna.

Cultural heritage

karcema.jpgThe main features include the Dubingiai urban complex with the Dubingiai mound and ancient castle site, the mound of Baluošai, the burial grounds at Žingiai, Degsnė, Jutoniai and Voroniai, the villages of Alka and Purviniškiai, the Dubingiai Tavern, the wooden bridge across Lake Asveja, and the oldest school in the Dubingiai region.

Museums

002.jpgThe village of Alka has the private museum of Artūras Davainis offering a display of household implements. The Dubingiai Tavern and the school house the Dubingiai Regional Culture and History Museum.

Recreation

001.JPGThe sites designated for tourists include the areas between lakes Žvernas and Asveja with Lake Žvernas, the eastern shore of Lake Asveja, the shoreline of Lake Ilgis (Gilaušis), the eastern shore of Lake Viranglis, Lake Nikajas with its western and northern shores and lakes Galonas and Leikštekis and their eastern shores.

Campsites are found at nearly every lake. Tents can be pitched at the campsites of Abejutės, Purviniškiai, Žingiai, Liudgardas and Galonas.

Visitors are welcome at the Dubingiai rest house all the year round. Here it is possible not only to rent rowboats or paddleboats but also to come for a longer stay and book a hall for conferences or parties. Sauna facilities are also available.

The viewpoints at Dubingiai and Baluošas and by lakes Ilgis and Žvernas offer beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

The town of Dubingiai is the starting point of interesting trips by boat or canoe through Lake Asveja (23 km) and the Dubinga stream (18 km) as far as the river Žeimena, from where tourists can reach also the Curonian Lagoon. Lakes Asveja, Baluošas, Žvernas and Arinas are suitable for yachting.

Dubingiai has an educational trail leading to the site of the ancient castle of Dubingiai.

The major attractions of cyclists and walkers are the trails of Dubingiai – Liudgardas – Baluoša – Žingiai – Jonėnai – Žalktynė – Dubingiai and of Padubingė – Abejučiai – Jakūbiškės – Žingiai – Padubingė. The trails are also suitable for skiing in winter.

Those fond of travelling by car are should go along the large ring: Dubingiai – Joniškis – Abejučiai – Sužionys – Žalktynė – Dubingiai.

In the forests, with the exception of those in the strict reserves, there are places where visitors can pick berries, mushrooms and hazelnuts. Anglers are attracted by the deep waters of lakes Asveja, Baluošas, Žvernas, Nikajas, Galonas and Leikštenis.
